>Cash for Clunkers worked a little bit! According to recently released government documents, people purchased about 700,000 new cars through the program in less than a month – http://www.cars.gov/carsreport. Total government payments for the program were $2.8 million and the average fuel economy of the new cars were 24.9 miles per gallon, up from 15.8 mpg for the old clunkers. Isn’t 24.9 mpg still pretty weak? My dads ancient Honda Civic gets about 40 mpg. Furthermore, the beneficiaries of the program were mainly foreign automakers like Toyota and Honda. Come on GM! Get in there and give us what we want! We own you… maybe we should demand more as shareholders.
