Last week the U.S. Department of Transportation announced which states would be the lucky recipients of a share of $2 billion in high-speed rail funds. The main headline is the $795 million destined for the Northeast Corridor and another $140 million heading to Northeastern states for improvements to the Corridor’s branch lines.

This is the first major award the Corridor has received in the two-year history of the High-Speed Intercity Passenger Rail Program and marks the most significant financial investment in the Northeast Corridor since the electrification of the final segment from New York to Boston in the early 1990s, paving the way for Amtrak’s Acela Express service.
