We’ve heard a lot about how highway miles are more fuel efficient than city miles. It’s a nice feeling to know you’re getting better gas mileage as you’re cruising down the interstate. But don’t go too fast.
New research from DriveGain, the company that offers an iPhone app that helps you get better fuel efficiency as you drive, shows that limiting your maximum speed can save you money on fuel. Studies show that reducing maximum speed to 60 mph can decrease fuel consumption by up to 10% while only adding about two minutes travel time, on average.
When driving at higher speeds, drivers tend to step on it to catch up to other cars and then brake once they’ve gotten there. These little spurts of speed use up more fuel and only negligibly decrease travel time. Staying at a steady, limited speed on the highway is an easy way to save money on gas without slowing you down very much.
